"CHARLES De GAULLE
New Years wishes to a French Colonel in French Guinea.
TLS: "C. de Gaulle", 1p, 8¼x10½. No place, 1950 January 6. In French, translated. To Colonel Allégret, Kolente by Conakry, French Guinea (Africa). In full: "I am very touched by your faithfulness of which your telegram is further proof. My wife joins me in sending you in this new year sincerest good wishes for you and yours. Please pay my respects to Madame Allégret." Charles DeGaulle (1890-1970), the leader of the Free French Forces in World War II, headed two provisional governments after the war (1945-1946) and then went into retirement. On June 1, 1958, DeGaulle came out of retirement. He served as Prime Minister from June 1, 1958 to January 8, 1959, when he became President under a new Constitution, which he drafted, for a Fifth French Republic. On October 3, 1958, five days after the new Constitution was adopted, French Guinea, previously part of French West Africa, rejected it and became an independent republic. DeGaulle retired on April 28, 1969. 2-inch vertical tear at upper right blank margin (all paper intact), transference of type at blank areas, some touch the "C" in Charles. Folds, vertical fold touches the "C".
