"...The Portugese consul was Aristides de Sousa Mendes, stationed in Bordeaux, France. Defying direct orders from his superiors and at great peril to himself and his family, Sousa Mendes granted thousands of visas to Jewish and other refugees fleeing occupied France in the summer of 1940. The history of Sousa Mendes’ heroic acts, and of my father’s escape from France with his sister, Alix Deguise, and mother, Helena Hamburger, is recounted in JOSÉ-ALAIN FRALON, ARISTIDES DE SOUSA MENDES: LE JUSTE DE BORDEAUX, 65–66 (Limoges, France: Mollat 1998)...."
