" PROUD HISTORY ... City Attorney Ariel Calonne beamed with obvious pride when the city honored his father, Pierre Calonne, and friend Andre Casalis as distinguished veterans of World War II at Monday night's City Council meeting. Casalis and Calonne were among the "500 Rebels for France" who fled Nazi-occupied France in 1940 to join the Free French forces under Gen. Charles De Gaulle. The two men met at the Free French Cadet School in England, where they became officers, and fought in Europe with the Allies against Nazi Germany. Calonne was wounded twice while serving as a liaison to the U.S. Army and received the Bronze Star and Silver Star. Casalis, who has written several books on the Cadets of Free France, was honored by his country with the Knight of the Legion of Honor and Medal of Resistance. Vice Mayor Lanie Wheeler welcomed Casalis and called on all Palo Altans to honor war veterans on Veterans Day and throughout the week."
