Pierre L’Hours

" Pierre L'Hours another French man still living on the Isle of Wight, was born in St. Nazaire in Brittany. Prior to joining the FNFL he was in the Merchant Navy on the liner Normandie. When France fell, the liner was in New York. He wanted to come to England and light for the Free French, but it was three months before he eventually got here. He left New York on 1 September 1940 on a Dutch cargo ship, which had sailed from Brooklyn via Nova Scotia, and arrived in Grangemouth on the 23 September 1940. The ship was en route to England as all of the crew wished to help the war effort. There were a dozen Frenchmen on board all of whom joined the FNFL; the rest of the crew was a mix of nationalities with many from the Dutch East Indies, who subsequent1y joined the Merchant Navy, as they were too old to fight. L'Hours signed up for the Free French in London on 20 October 1940 and transferred to the battleship Courbet at Portsmouth the following day. Within hours he was serving on board Chasseur 10. This was because he was a diesel specialist and there was a shortage of engineers. As soon as he embarked, number 10 was sent out on patrol. He stayed on board number 10 until March 1943, when he was promoted to engineer on Chasseur 12 remaining in this post until the ship was decommissioned in November 1945. (L'Hours, 24/06/99)."

" Relationships with the townsfolk of Cowes were very good, as Chaline has claimed in his book: ‘The best souvenir I have kept of the Isle of Wight was the warm welcome given by the population.’ (Chaline, 1992, p313). All of the men interviewed remarked on how the ordinary people of the Island welcomed them. Many of the men had local girlfriends whom they subsequently married, although Pierre L'Hours has recalled how some of his wife’s friends did not want to know her whilst they were courting, as their parents were anti-French."
