A Scunthorpe link with the French navy
Louis le Halper with a British solder (r)
My father was a Free French navy man who arrived in England after the Egypt campaign. His name was Louis le Halper.
He was billeted with my mother, two sisters and two brothers in Eastbourne from 1943 to 1944.
There were nearly two hundred Free French living on the South Coast. They were collected together and sent to Arachncarry Castle for three months to train as commandos, with the British Forces.
A small group was sent over to France on 23 December 1943 to reconnoitre for the invasion of France. They successfully returned to England.
They were preparing on the South Coast for the build up of men, equipment, planes and Horsa gliders throughout those months leading up to D-Day.
As we know it was delayed for 24 hours awaiting a more favourable weather forecast.
My father's group became the No.4 Kieffer Commando, part of the Special Services No. 1.
Early on the morning of 6th June My father's ship joined up with the Armada gathered from Portsmouth along the whole coast, south of the Isle of Wight, and they were the first of the troops to set foot on the Normandy beaches.
I know that there are men from Scunthorpe who were also in the Kieffer Commando who will be attending the Badge award ceremonies at Ouistreham where the Commando landed and were ordered to guard the eastern flank of the British forces landing at Sword Beach
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers Louis le Halper and I have attached a photo of him with a British soldier.
