Henri Cailliau - A colleague of my father in Marseilles 1943

My father, René Simon Ancel, worked with Henri in the offices of a wool merchant in Marseilles prior to Henri’s escape over the Pyrenees to Spain and then England. When Henri disappeared from his workplace, René was arrested, beaten up and interrogated about his disappearance. Here is an extract from the account René gave to a BCRA/DGER officer after the war:
“During my employment at Maison SEGARD, I met General de Gaulle's nephew, Mr. Henri CAILLIAU, a member of the COMBAT organization.
Through him, I contacted one of his friends, a customs agent in Marseille, who told me about a route to be smuggled into Spain.
On November 11, 1942, the date of the Germans' entry into the free zone, Mr. Caillau did not return to the Maison SEGARD, because he had fled to Spain.

The Vichy police were actively looking for him, the inspectors came to fetch me and took me to the bishop's palace where I was interrogated about my friend Caillau.”

Of course René told the police nothing. He was arrested again a month later and learnt that the authorities knew he was Jewish. In December 1943 my father also fled France over the Pyrenees to Spain and then eventually to England where he joined the SOE and was parachuted back into France in July 1944.

En mémoire de mon père

Je ne parle pas francais bien - je suis desolee. Simon (Rene) Ancel etait mon pere, malheureusement il est mort 1966. Je connais peu les exploits de mon père dans la guerre, je suis donc ravi de retrouver cet hommage - cela me rend très fier. Toute aide pour en savoir plus serait appréciée. Merci
