Typhoon You will find the following informations about the typhoon at
SS Cedar Mills
In December 1943, SS Cedar Mills and her French destroyer escort were caught in a violent cyclone and became widely separated. The destroyer, short of fuel and unable to maneuver, was in a sinking condition with a 45 degree list when the SS Cedar Mills picked up her distress call. Against strong winds and mountainous seas, she fought through to the other ship's assistance, succeeded in transferring most of her crew, and towed the destroyer for 5 days until rendezvous was made with a British Man-of-War which relieved her.
The stark courage of her gallant crew in this heroic rescue caused her name to be perpetuated as a Gallant Ship.
You will also find as a document my father's notes taken all along this sad episode. Patrick Hervé fils de Raymond Hervé le samedi 22 août 2009 - Demander un contact Recherche sur cette contribution

Thank you Patrick, the photos you include here are a gold mine. I have notes written by Pierre outlining the journey of the Triomphant from 1941 to 1945. At one point in the notes my Grandfather refers to a typhoon but does not provide information about the event. In 1997 I visited Brest with my wife and I had lunch with Marcel Lebas, his wife Henriette and a number of the sailors from the Triomphant. A very special day for me. At this lunch Marcel told me the story of the typhoon. Apparently the typhoon nearly capsized the ship and a number of the crew had to be transported to a nearby island as they were sick or injured. The remaining crew worked day and night to bail the water from the ship to right it again and I believe some of the crew died during this incident. I remember Marcel was very emotional when he told me this story. From Pierre's notes I believe this event occurred between the 25th November 1943 and 19th December. The Triomphant departed Freemantle (Perth, Australia) at 1:30 pm and convoyed a dutch supply ship "Java" and an American Tanker "Cedar Mills" on route to Diego Suarez (Madagascar) docking at 7pm. If you have any other stories to add to the one outlined above or can add information to the above story that would be great. I have prepared my Grandfather's log as a photo story using pictures I have found on the net. I am happy to forward this to you if you provide contact details. Sorry I am sorry not to have more informations about your grand father. I found this picture in my father's box of souvenirs. He also was a sailor on the Triomphant all along the war time. On the back of the picture was his surname and his knickname Ti-zeph, commonly used for children born in Brest in the district of St Pierre Quilbignon.
I don't have informations about the wedding rings.
My father died in 1974. Since I was in contact with some Free French sailors of the Triomphant but they all are dead now.
Another sailor from the Triomphant was remained in Australia and had a sad end there. His name is Oillic and you will know more about him by reading the notice.
I have already added many other pictures of my father's mates on their different notices.
I add a picture of the Triumphant arriving in Sydney Patrick Hervé, fils Raymond Hervé le samedi 25 juillet 2009 - Demander un contact Recherche sur cette contribution
