Christian Georges Chapman - son Livre ouvert !

Honored to have served with Chris Chapman

I had the honor of serving as Press Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Paris when Chris Chapman was our Deputy Chief of Mission. It was only in reading his obituary that I realized what a life he had led. He was too modest to boast about it. I will always remember him as a most intelligent, fair and generous person whom I greatly admired. I am sorry to learn of his passing, but proud that we were able to work together.

"Christian A. Chapman, a U.S. diplomat who served in hot spots including Southeast Asia and survived an assassination attempt in Paris during a three-decade career in the Foreign Service, died Nov. 27 at his home in Washington. He was 95.

The cause was dementia, said his son, Hillary Chapman.

The son of an American father and a French mother, Mr. Chapman served with the Free French forces in World War II before joining the diplomatic ranks in 1950. His first assignment was as a consular officer in Casablanca during the waning days of French rule in Morocco.

He later served as an economic officer in Beirut and as an assistant to the U.S. ambassador to Iran, arriving shortly after Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh was deposed in a U.S.-backed coup in 1953.

Mr. Chapman spent the late 1950s in Vietnam and then Laos, where he was chief political officer. After postings in Luxembourg, Paris, Brussels and Washington, he returned to Laos in the mid-1970s. As chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Vientiane, he helped manage the crisis when demonstrators with the communist organization Pathet Lao seized control of U.S. buildings..."

Merci !

"Finally I would like to salute Mr. Christian Chapman, board member emeritus, who, by the way, as a young man in 1941 left college and went to England, eventually joining the Free French Air Force, which was at that time part of the Royal Air Force. He became a Spitfire fighter pilot covering the Normandy landings and the onslaught on Germany until, as he succinctly puts it, he was shot down in January of 1945. So we have a real hero with us tonight."

" Comment by Mr. Christian Chapman, former fighter pilot of the group Ile de France.

For the commemoration of "l'Appel du 18 Juin" at the French Embassy

Washington, June 18th, 1996
"I am an American who had the privilege of serving with the Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres from June 1941 to June 1945. That is the reason I am honored to be with you today.

It seems appropriate to me that an American testify on this French national day to the significance of l'Appel for Americans.

To understand, you have to recall the times. On June 18, 1940, Hitler had conquered Europe - from Poland to the Atlantic, from Norway to the border of Spain which was controlled by a friendly dictator. Italy of course was in the hands of another friendly dictator.

The real shock, however, of that tragic spring was the fall of France. The collapse in six weeks of the French Army - considered since WWI the best in the world - created a sense of fear and helpessness and hopelessness. Nothing, it seemed, could stop Hitler.

The Soviet Union had made a 180 degree political turn in August 1939, permitting Hitler to attack Poland and remaining to all evidence an ally of Germany.

There was England where pacifism in the '30's had a strong hold on people - as in France, both countries living in the traumatized memory of WWI. It is well to remember that when WWII broke out in 1939, it was but a brief 21 years since the end of the previous great war that was to be the war that ended all wars. Think about it. What would have been the reaction of all of us if another war had broken out in 1976?

In June 1940, England was not only woefully unprepared but also had lost, in the retreat through Dunkirk, a major portion of its military equipment. The island was frighteningly vulnerable.

The US had not yet recovered from the great Depression. Unemployment stood at about 25% and there were strong neutrality laws in vigor seeking to prevent the US from becoming involved in foreign wars. Versailles had left a residue of disillusionment.

It really took an act of faith beyond any rational analysis and a will of iron to believe that Nazi Germany could be stopped.

And so, in this dark time of dispair, the clarion call to arms sounded by an unknown, freshly appointed French General with the predestined name of de Gaulle, caught the popular imagination and never lost its magic. Throughout the war, the American people viewed him as the embodiment of the spirit of liberty and resistance to Hitler, the very raison d'être of the whole war. An individual standing up to tyranny. An individual representing a great country that had been the birthplace of liberty. A man of courage and principal.

The support of Americans for de Gaulle held throughout the war and in fact moderated the poor personal relationship between him and FDR.

I am therefore proud to join you today in remembering that historical moment of June 1940, when France through an unknown general upheld the idea of freedom. That is what Americans expect of France."
