"... When Rossellini struck out upon his search for a sponsor, he found one: Claude Baks (a name that in English sounds like a joke, though in the original Latvian it does not). Claude Léon Baks (1917–1986) was an ombudsman at one of the world’s most successful corporations, Schlumberger — a German name, but since the company is based in France and since the Schlumberger family was French, it’s pronounced the French way: shloom-bayr-ZHAY. Unlike most major corporations, its directors were politically on the left and highly progressive, donating their profits to human-rights and civil-rights concerns as well as to the arts. Some even lived in humble apartments rather than the mansions they could easily afford. Claude Baks was deeply interested in theatre and cinema, which is probably why he married a puppeteer, Anne Pauline Caprile (b. Nice, 18 November 1920, d. Silly, 19 February 2013). Roberto Rossellini proved himself eminently qualified for a grant, and Baks, in return for arranging Schlumberger to finance the work, earned the copyright to the Caligula project. Who are his heirs? I have not a clue. Do they even know that they once owned this? I strongly doubt it. ..." Laloup Laurent le vendredi 16 mars 2018 - Demander un contact Recherche sur cette contribution | |
