Edith Irving - son Livre ouvert ! Edith Irving was my great Aunt My apologies for not speaking French, but it was a great pleasure to find this reference to my great aunt Edith who died only a few years ago, aged 97. Edith was born in Whitehaven, England in 1906, and was already a very experienced nurse when she signed up for the Free French. She was one of the longest serving nurses in the Hadfield-Spears Unit, and sat beside Lady Spears in their final procession up the Champs-Elysees. There are many references to Edith in the various books, diaries and archive sound recordings that I have collected together over the last few years. She also left me a large collection of photographs from her time with Unit which I will attempt to upload to this site now that I have discovered its existence. I would be very happy for anyone who has an interest in the HS Unit to contact me at my e-mail address richard@pib.co.uk. for le mardi 12 juillet 2022 - Demander un contact Recherche sur cette contribution | |

JOURNEY DOWN A BLIND ALLEY Mary Borden "... They were not dismayed, the young women. Mrs. Cook produced a couple of dozen M.T.C. volunteers who were first vetted by T. W. and reduced to twelve, then interviewed by me. It was a difficult business to choose. As I looked into their faces, listened to their voices, I realized what a gamble it was. For this was not like going to France. If I chose wrong and a girl turned out badly I couldn't send her home. The same applied to the nurses. Some who applied were too old, some too young, some didn't look strong. It was all very tricky. Daphne Burnside, M.T.C, was dangerously alluring, but there was something very sweet and good-humored about her. I was right about Daphne. Joy Goode looked sturdy and inspired confidence, she would stay the course; I was wrong, she was married to Mervyn Phipps from my house in the Lebanon four months later. Edith Irving might have a temper but her nursing experience was very great and her giggle very infectious. She might turn up trumps. Right again. She did. I learned to count on Irving. But how could I tell what we were going to come up against and what was an ideal recruit for our adventurous enterprise with a future as vague and un- certain as ours? I didn't know..."
